Take Away Show – Porcelain Raft

One of the things I love most about La Blogotheque’s Take Away Show series is the character of the room they capture.  The performances are almost always stripped down to a bare bones level but the sounds just sort of seem to linger for awhile and Porcelain Raft’s Take Away Show is no different.  His show was shot in a couple of narrow, sparsely decorated rooms in Toronto and Williamsburg with lone piano accompaniment but it doesn’t feel that way.  It feels as though his piano is in the back of your mind, like it was there long before you watched these video.  So, yeah, I liked it.  Both performances are after the jump.  Enjoy.

Take Away Show – Retro Stefson

I haven’t posted one of La Blogotheque’s Take Away Shows in a while, but this one’s a solid effort to come back on.  Retro Stefson is an afro-pop band hailing all the way from Iceland.  Sound strange?  Well, they kind of are, but let me assure you, their sound is something special, their grooves are absolutely undeniable, and they will make you dance.  Here, they play their track “Qween” in an airplane hangar.  Jump and you won’t be disappointed.

Take Away Show – Kathleen Edwards

This most recently released La Blogotheque Take Away Show highlights the strikingly beautiful Kathleen Edwards and her deceptively powerful vocal stylings.  Ms. Edwards and friends stroll around the grounds of La Grande Halle de la Villette crooning some very pop-sensible tracks on a bunch of acoustic string instruments.  She performs her tracks, “Sidecar” and “Empty Threat”, and the clip’s biggest flaw is its brevity, which isn’t really such an impressive flaw to have.  Jump and enjoy.

Take Away Show – Stornoway

Oh, how I love the sound of freak folk in the morning.  Stornoway is a fairly prototypical example of a freak folk outfit and a perfect fit for La Blogotheque’s Take Away Show series.  Here they perform their track “When You Touch Down from Outer Space” in a cozy Paris park while in town for the Pitchfork Music Festival.  The song’s a sing-a-long type of track that would make David Bowie so proud (or at least Major Tom).  Jump and enjoy.  P.S.  I’ve never seen a singer look so much like a vampire (i.e. Edward Cullen).

Take Away Show – EMA

There will always be a special place in my heart for the Grunge Age of music and its tattered flannel and faded jeans and it would appear that EMA has never left it behind.  She’s a singer-songwriter from England rocking the tattered jean jacket-ragged t-shirt-leggings look and she’s oozing angst–she looks like an extra from Slackers, to be honest.  She specializes in that 1990s brand of street corner soapbox rhetoric I thought we had left two decades ago, but alas, EMA makes it her own.  Her performances here go from solo acoustic guitar crooning on the streets to singing alongside a lone violin in a crypt.  Yeah, a crypt.  Jump and enjoy.

Take Away Show – My Brightest Diamond

Here’s one of the latest installments of La Blogotheque’s Take Away Show series and it might be my favorite of the lot (or, at least, one of my favorites).  This one’s a fairly straight forward performance featuring singer/songwriter My Brightest Diamond playing a lone electric guitar in a Berlin restaurant.  She plays her track, “I Have Never Loved Someone the Way I Loved You”, off her recently released LP All Things Will Unwind and really does a stellar job.  Her vocals with minimalist guitar accompaniment are really quite sad, so much so that it brings tears not only to the eyes of a man listening to her, but also to herself.  Seriously.  Hit the jump and give it a watch.

Take Away Show – Aloe Blacc

Here’s a match made in heaven–Aloe Blacc’s smooth, emotionally-charged vocal prowess paired with La Blogotheque’s spontaneous Take Away Show vibe.  This performance of Mr. Blacc’s “Green Lights” was shot in a tent at this year’s Michelberger Mystery Music (MMM) Festival and it’s pretty much the quintessential Take Away Show–you even get to hear a rather rowdy Blacc fan quiet down the crowd by screaming at them (you’ve gotta love the irony).  Though, I think it bares noting that the high point of this performance is the instrumentation, most notably, the saxophone–check it out and you’ll see what I mean.  Jump and enjoy.

Take Away Show – Little Scream

Firstly, I’ll admit I’m a sucker for La Blogotheque’s Take Away Show series.  There’s just something about the spontaneity and eloquence of these toned down, mostly acoustic performances that is just so endearing and innocent.  That being said, Little Scream’s Take Away Show is right up that alley.  The performers stroll through Trinity-Bellwoods Park serenading precocious onlookers and passersby with gentle acoustic guitars, airy violins, and dreamy vocal melodies that compliment each other so perfectly, it would seem they were made for this park and this show (my favorite part is the man walking along carrying a guitar case used for percussion).  Jump and enjoy.

Take Away Show – Bomba estereo

Well, I’m back from my temporary health hiatus (of sorts) and what could be a better first post than another wonderful Take Away Show from La Blogotheque?  This Show highlights the Spanish-speaking Latin indie band Bomba estereo as they perform a couple of nice tunes on the streets of Bogota, Colombia.  It’s really some nice, easy listening to cool down to on these hot days.  Jump and enjoy.

Take Away Show – Typhoon

If you’re at all familiar with my posting history, then you know I hold La Blogotheque’s Take Away Shows with great esteem.  The directors just seem to catch the honesty of the songwriting and the performance in its most raw state and that’s exactly what we have here. Typhoon’s performance was shot in a forest somewhere outside of Austin, TX.  The band’s members were strewn about the forest floor and some were even in the trees.  This is folk at its finest.  Jump and enjoy.
