Bon Iver – “Towers” (Video)

Bon Iver’s next single “Towers” drops March 6 and to tide you over, here’s the brand spanking new video for the track and it’s pretty fantastic.  The visuals follow a day in the life of a gray-bearded fisherman all the way from his waking up in bed to his daily jaunt into the sea and let me tell you, the ending makes the whole thing.  It’s surprising and beautiful.  Jump and enjoy.

Bon Iver – “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)” (John Prine Cover)

Bon Iver’s next single for the track “Towers” is being prepared for a March 6 release in the US (January 23 in the UK) but in the meantime, we have the B-side available for your listening pleasure.  Justin Vernon rehashes John Prine’s “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)” and turns it into an absolutely reverb-drenched western ballad that even old-time Hank Williams fans would thoroughly enjoy.  Take the jump and give it a listen.

Deadwood Floats – “Holocene” (Bon Iver Cover)

Here’s as good of a cover track as you’re likely to find these days.  Deadwood Floats’ rehashing of the Bon Iver instant classic “Holocene” is nearly an exact copy of the original with the exception of newly added piano and a really cool percussion part joining in after the chorus.  This one gets really, really high marks in my book.  Well done, Deadwood Floats–I’m sure Mr. Vernon’s beaming with pride somewhere.  Jump and enjoy.

Watch All 10 Bon Iver Short Films

I wrote not long ago about the impending release of the deluxe edition of Bon Iver’s infinitely successful self-titled record and now, Jagjaguwar has released it for public consumption.  Included with the specially released album are 10 short film/videos directed to accompany each track on the record in their own unique ways.  The actual quality of the videos is sort of up for debate but they’ve each got their own new age thing going on and they’re worth a watch.  A host of directors took shots at creating these including Isaac Gale, David Jensen, and the man himself, Justin Vernon.  Each of the videos is available at Bon Iver’s channel on YouTube and because I love you all, they’re also posted after the jump.  You’re welcome.

Bon Iver – “Hinnom, TX” (Video)

Here’s the accompanying video to “Hinnom, TX” from the deluxe edition of Bon Iver, Bon Iver set to be released tomorrow (11/29).  Not a whole lot going on except some rolling panoramic shots of various countryside/road landscapes, but it still works.  There’s something about juxtaposing Bon Iver’s sound on the latest record with natural environments that just seems right.  Jump away.

Bon Iver & James Blake – “Fall Creek Boys Choir”

I’m not sure I’ve ever been so pumped to hear a collaboration in my entire life.  Bon Iver and James Blake are two of my absolute favorite acts out there right now and, as I had hoped, the product of their union totally delivers.  “Fall Creek Boys Choir” sounds exactly as it’s touted to be–an almost perfectly 50/50 melding of Justin Vernon and James Blake’s musical minds.  JV’s falsetto vocals settle nicely alongside Blake’s slightly auto-tuned melodies and the piano-driven rhythm sections push the track along oh, so gently.  I definitely approve–jump and enjoy.

Watch Bon Iver Cover Björk

I love it when a group I’m into takes on another artist I love’s material and does a superb job interpreting it.  Here’s Bon Iver’s version of Björk’s “Who Is It” from the opening night of the group’s world tour in Milwaukee.  Justin Vernon obviously doesn’t have the vocal range of the Icelandic goddess but he does a pretty fair job in his own right, plus there’s some pretty awesome beat-boxing going on from the group’s trombonist/percussionist, so you’ve gotta love that.  Jump and check it out.

Watch Bon Iver Perform “Holocene” on Fallon

I posted Bon Iver’s last appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon not all that long ago and now he’s back with another one and this one’s fucking beautiful.  Justin Vernon’s last performance on Fallon was only he and a single piano for accompaniment but this time he’s got his entire touring band for a performance of “Holocene” from the Bon Iver, Bon Iver LP that came out earlier this week.  If you do one thing today, make it watching this performance–it damn near brought tears to my eyes.  JV’s music is less about the form and more about the finished piece and that’s exactly what’s on display here.  I have got to see Bon Iver live this summer.  I have to.  Jump and enjoy.

Bon Iver – “Calgary” (Video)

As the days pass since I first got my hands on Bon Iver, Bon Iver, I can say I have fallen decidedly in love with every sound that emanates from my speakers as it is played.  It’s just so new and different in so many ways (I smell a review coming…), so I think it’s fitting that the first music video for a track from the record should be a little peculiar.  The video for “Calgary” is so incredibly open for interpretation that I would really be doing it a disservice by explaining to you what’s going on in the footage.  I think that much of Bon Iver’s music tends to evoke certain emotions solely based upon the sonic landscape that Mr. Vernon and crew construct, not the lyrical content (though Justin Vernon is an excellent lyricist), and that’s totally what’s going on here.  The main idea’s not in the video’s plot but in the way the images make you feel just like the music.  Hit the jump and enjoy.

Stream the New Bon Iver LP

It’s almost time for Bon Iver’s self-titled record to hit stores (June 21) but if you’re in a hurry to hear what all the hype’s about (and you should be because it’s fucking amazing) you can listen to it in its entirety right after the jump via NPR.  This is seriously a treat because this album is honestly really, really good–so much better than I was expecting/hoping for.  Do yourself a favor and hit the jump.  Thank me later.
